Dear Applicant,

Welcome to our HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program. Our hospital is located in sunny Florida, within driving distance to waterfront communities, Vero Beach and close to great attractions in Jupiter, Orlando, West Palm Beach and Miami. Our hospital is also a tertiary care center that provides care to a vibrant and diverse community in the Treasure Coast region of South Florida. HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital is a safety net hospital and a Certified Stroke Center, Trauma Center, Advanced Heart Center, Pediatric Emergency Care Center with a level III NICU, and certified Rehabilitation Center. Lawnwood has received numerous awards for its commitment to excellence in care, including America's 50 Best Hospitals for Vascular Surgery (Healthgrades), Five-star designation for Gynecologic Services (Healthgrades), and has received Top Performer designation from The Joint Commission for several years in a row.

By joining our residency, you will be part of the exciting process of building a new residency program and a culture of excellence in Graduate Medical Education at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. In this effort, you will be joining residents from our General Surgery program and, over the next couple of years, several additional programs in a variety of specialties. As part of HCA’s thriving East Florida Graduate Medical Education Division (EFD), with its over 40 programs and over 600 residents and fellows, our program and each of our residents will benefit from the expertise and resources HCA and EFD make available to everyone of its Learners. Our program serves a diverse patient population with a very broad range of pathology. We always strive to espouse academic and administrative excellence during our ambitious day to day operation. We are excited to work with our inaugural class that will help us through this unique moment of transformation and for years to come.

Our robust didactic curriculum offers a broad array of conferences, small group leaning, interactive learning activities, and simulation-based training across the full spectrum of medical specialties. This includes monthly administrative reports to help our trainees understand the business side of medicine and provide high-quality, cost-effective care, monthly Sim lab which includes Point of Care Ultrasound training to help our trainees hone their procedural skills, monthly journal club which helps our trainees excel in critical appraisal of evidence and literature review, and monthly Morbidity and Mortality session which helps our trainees learn by reflecting. Our regular morning reports and board review sessions are going to be jointly directed by faculty and residents to enhance our residents’ pattern recognition skills. Our didactics session and scholarly activities will be supervised by faculty, each resident will be assigned a faculty mentor to ensure that you master the art and science of medicine.

We believe that it is important to provide a well-balanced education across the inpatient and outpatient settings. We also believe that continuity of care is key for the optimal education of our residents. Our 4+1 scheduling system is structured so that residents attend 1 week of uninterrupted clinic after each 4-week block. This aims at ensuring continuity of care and the well being of our resident doctors. Up to 30% of our schedule is dedicated to different electives which offers ample opportunity for subspeciality training and scholarly activities for each of our residents.

We are focused on fostering a culture of inclusion, intellectual curiosity, and autonomy. Our goal is to help our trainees find their true purpose, prepare them to excel in any career path they choose, this includes careers in leadership , teaching , research, and subspecialty fellowship training.

Mission Statement

The HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program's mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders.

As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.

This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where physicians are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding physicians' perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values and ideals.

Program Overview

Thank you for your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency Program. By joining our residency, you will be part of the exciting process of building a new program and a culture of excellence in Graduate Medical Education at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital. In this effort, you will join physicians from our general surgery residency and, over the next couple of years, several additional programs in a variety of specialties.

Our residency is a thriving part of the Graduate Medical Education programs at HCA Healthcare's East Florida Division (EFD). Our GME training comprises over 40 programs and over 600 residents and fellows who benefit from the expertise and resources that our network and EFD make available to each of its learners.

Curriculum and Rotation Schedule

Our expertly crafted programs are designed to provide resident and fellow physicians with all the experiences and training necessary for professional success.

Our program provides care to a vibrant and diverse community in South Florida’s Treasure Coast region. Your training will take place at our community-based, 430-bed advanced care hospital which offers services including a Certified Stroke Center, a Level II Trauma Center, Advanced Heart Center, Pediatric Emergency Care Center with a Level III NICU, and Certified Rehabilitation Center.

Yes, we consider J-1 Visa applicants who have an ECFMG certification (H-1B, EAD are not accepted).

What is the name of the continuity clinic that partners with the HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program?

Our Residency Training Program partners with Whole Family Health Center which is a comprehensive outpatient center, it has two locations at Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach.

What are some of the benefits that our Program offers?

Equipment (mobile device/laptop), licensure (limited), ACLS/BLS certification and certification required by the hospital, in-service exams, lab coats, daily meal allowance while working, orientation stipend.

Do residents get sick days or time off?

Yes. Each resident/fellow receives annual paid leave to cover time off for vacation, sick, holiday or other time away from work.
