How do you read a radar display? ›

The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds. Red is typically a target moving away from the radar, while green is applied to targets moving toward the radar.

Weather surveillance radars such as the WSR-88D can detect most precipitation within approximately 80 nautical miles (nm) of the radar, and intense rain or snow within approximately 140 nm. However, light rain, light snow, or drizzle from shallow cloud weather systems are not necessarily detected.

1.4 Display Modes. There are a number of display modes on a modern radar for determining exactly how the radar shows information in relation to the outside world. These cover three different areas, which are referred to as orientation, motion and stabilization modes.

The receiver converts all received electromagnetic radiation into a continuous electronic analog signal of varying (or oscillating) voltage that can be converted then to a screen display. Modern systems typically use some sort of raster scan display to produce a map-like image.

On a weather radar map, a tornado is usually indicated by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green. However, modern radar systems can also indicate debris balls, a sign of a tornado on the ground.

As the beam travels away from the radar source, it gets higher above the ground due to the curvature of the Earth. Therefore, if the precipitation is restricted to very low levels, especially within a few hundred feet from the ground, the radar beam might overshoot it, leading to undetected rainfall.

Based on our observations, rain can cause false readings or interfere with the radar's ability to determine a vehicle's speed. Despite these challenges, radar devices are still used in rainy conditions, although officers may rely more on visual cues and other forms of speed measurement.

While latency exists in every NEXRAD image, it will be exacerbated in these locations. While black on a radar display may represent an area with little or no precipitation, there are several scenarios where serious hazards may be cloaked in black.

The colors are typically a spectrum. The greens indicate light or moderate rainfall. Yellow, orange, and red indicate moderate to heavy rainfall and can also indicate hail. Whites or blues mean snowfall and pink indicates freezing rain, sleet, or a wintry mix.

Red shows winds blowing away from the radar, and green shows winds blowing toward it. Stronger winds usually equate to brighter colors on the radar imagery. You can spot rotation and a possible tornado in a thunderstorm by looking for strong winds blowing in different directions right next to each other.

X-band alerts (“Beep”) are often found at long distances. K and Ka bands are usually detected at closer range, and alerts on those frequencies are much more likely to be radar. So Valentine One makes a different sound (“Brap”) to warn you of these more urgent threats (bogeys).
