Sources and method

A reference is only worth the procedure behind it. This is the one used here, including what happens when a figure cannot be verified.

What counts as a primary document

Three kinds of document are treated as primary here. Published standards, which define a mechanical interface or a test method and carry an edition. Published application notes from semiconductor manufacturers, which describe how a device family behaves and are written by the people who make it. And established textbook definitions of measurement quantities, which are stable and reproducible.

The standards this publication leans on most are the IEEE Std 287 family, which governs precision coaxial connectors and is the reason two makers' connectors mate repeatably at all, and the MIL-STD-202 and MIL-STD-883 families of test methods, which is what a screening line on a datasheet is pointing at when it cites a method number. Where an assembly is described as built to a hybrid microcircuit standard, that is MIL-PRF-38534.

How a figure gets onto a page

A definitional figure, meaning one that follows from the definition of the quantity, is published with the calculation shown so that a reader can reproduce it. The conversion between return loss and voltage standing wave ratio on the front page is an example: it is arithmetic, it is shown, and it can be checked in a minute.

A measured figure is not published at all unless it comes from a document that is named on the page. This publication makes no measurements of its own and owns no instruments, so there is no bench data here and no page pretends otherwise. A parameter is therefore described by what it means and how it is obtained, never by a value that would have to belong to somebody's product.

What is refused

No figure attributed to a named product. No reproduction of a manufacturer's documentation. No document subject to export control. No estimate presented as a measurement, and no round number offered as typical when nothing has been read. When the honest answer is that the value depends on the part, the page says that the value depends on the part.

Corrections

When a page is found to be wrong it is corrected and the correction is dated in place. The original error is described rather than silently removed, because a reference that quietly rewrites itself cannot be trusted by anyone who cited it. Corrections arrive through the contact page and are welcome.
